A State(ment) of the Arts

Abstract

This article positions Humanities and Education as a platform for research on the reciprocal relationship between the humanities and education. It argues that humanities subjects in (particularly secondary) education extend beyond school achievement and qualification, fostering socialization, subjectification, critical literacy and understanding of socio-cultural discourses. It also identifies these subjects' marginalization through economic and measurement-driven educational agendas. Consequently, this article calls for interdisciplinary, methodologically diverse and authentic research addressing teachers, pupils, schools and the broader socio-political contexts of humanities education research.
